About Us

We are a friendly group of history and archaeology enthusiasts, based in Watford, Herts, UK. It is run by volunteers and is a registered charity. Members enjoy talks on local, national and International history and archaeology at meetings and on line, and visit historic sites. We undertake practical archaeological projects, under the supervision of experienced archaeologists, and we give training to beginners. The Society was founded in 1954 and has carried out a variety of archaeological investigations in S.W. Herts

Talks

Our programme includes local history of the SW Herts and other parts of the UK, and popular international ancient history. Archaeology is covered by reports of recent excavations, together with allied subjects; we have included geophysical survey, geology, metal detecting and detailed lectures on finds or artefacts, such as pottery, coins and prehistoric tools. Lecturers include experts from leading museums, universities and archaeological firms. Members also give talks about their own research or special interests. In the last 4 years all lectures have been on Zoom, free to members. Have a look at this year’s Programme.

Walks

Members of the society lead Heritage Walks in Cassiobury Park, Watford. Next dates

Archaeology

Originally named the Watford & District Archaeological Society, members were undertaking excavations at sites in Watford High Street and nearby from 1960 to 1986. In 2016 we excavated the site of the Swiss Cottage, built for the Earl of Essex, 200 years ago. More projects in Cassiobury are being planned and we welcome both novices and experienced diggers.
